How AI penetrates into the most creative areas of our life

Have you ever wondered what role AI plays in your life? After all, this is already an integral part of our reality. Take the same Alexa or Alice. They help us to manage our lives, plan, organize comfort. And this is no longer perceived as something unusual. The pace of development of artificial intelligence accelerates every year, AI penetrates into the most creative areas of our life.

AI + Art

One of the recent projects by Sougwen Chung, a Chinese-born, Canadian-raised artist & (re)searcher, most known as an AI artist, who uses hand-drawn and computer-generated marks to explore the intersections between humans, machines and ecologies, was created during the time of quarantine. It is called the “Flora Rearing Agricultural Network”.

F.R.A.N. is a project exploring plant and machine co-naturality. The first iteration of it is a performance featuring the creation of a speculative blueprint for a new robotic network connected to nature. Created during the first quarantine of COVID-19 in 2020. A backdrop of digital flora is linked to the artist’s brainwave data, each flux in alpha-state seeding of new formations of sepals, petals, and leaves. The performance is an initial introduction to the physical construction of F.R.A.N., a networked robotic system to be built in 2021.

This project combines art and technology. Music, painting and artificial intelligence (AI). It may seem that if painting with music can somehow be combined, then what does AI have to do with it? In this project, it was technologies that became a kind of bridge for communication between the two directions. We can say that AI is an artist inspired by music to create an incredible picture. The sight is truly enchanting.

This is an audiovisual concert for two motorized pianos and two conductors in collaboration with generative algorithms. Each note played is a stroke of paint. The image is projected onto a large canvas and a feeling of complete immersion in the process of creating a picture is created. For this project, new software has been developed to seamlessly connect images and sound. The sound plays a key role, and the soundscape is the decoding of the process itself. Transient starts a new direction in Quayola Studio, where experimentation extends to sound through unconventional generative systems.

The David’s World project, Darya Levchenko, Olia Fedorova, Pavel Blinokhvatov, Yarema Ostrovsky, Alex Sirous and Yurii Tymoshenko

The David’s World project, created within the framework of the American Arts Incubator, where “David” is a character, bot, inhabitant and owner of this world, named in honor of David Icke, English writer and “professional conspiracy theorist”, who was banned on Youtube and Facebook for his videos about coronavirus. The user enters his world through a browser application and can ask David any question. With each David’s answer the virtual space around is transformed in a random, unpredictable way, and if the user talks with him long enough, then in the end he will find himself surrounded by a complete chaos and madness, from which it is very difficult to get out.

It is remarkable, that the team, people with completely different backgrounds, first met due to the American Arts Incubator and have not even been working together before the project.

AI + Games

Developer Nick Walton created a game in which you can do absolutely anything. The game is available online as well as for iOS & Android.

It is a text-based game whose framework is limited only by the user’s imagination. It is based on AI, which will make the wildest dreams possible by generating unlimited content. It also allows players to create and share their own custom adventure settings. The AI will then generate a setting, based on the user’s input.

AI + Media

AI generated article published by the “Knife”. Source: https://knife.media/emotional-disorientation/

On September 12 the “Knife” published an article written by a neural network called “Sometimes we forget to put our ideas in place. What is emotional disorientation and how to cope with it”.

The neural network by InferKit has previously studied materials on similar topics previously published in the “Knife”. For a new article, artificial intelligence came up with a cognitive-psychological disorder, a conceptual apparatus, argumentation, expert opinions, and also a quote from a nonexistent book by Ludwig Wittgenstein called “Pigeon notebooks”. And most of the readers did not even notice this, as the resource mentioned in the revealing article:

“It was not a goal by itself to mislead the readers: we wanted to find out how far the developers of artificial intelligence have advanced and how human-like neural networks have become by today. The result was impressive, even though the text itself turned out to be completely meaningless — but in terms of structure and style, it is impressive: the work of a literary editor with it was no more difficult than editing the average material on psychology”.

AI + Psychology

Elomia — an AI-powered friend. Source: https://elomia.com/#about

For example, a startup Elomia, created by students of NTU “KhPI”. Elomia is an artificial intelligence that replaces the psychologist. You can chat with a virtual psychologist anonymously and the AI builds conversation in a way that helps to make you feel better and solve life problems, as it is mentioned on the official website. The goal of the startup is to make the depression more bearable for people who are in self-isolation or simply can’t see a therapist.

These are not all the innovations in the field of AI, but this is enough to understand what role AI plays in our life. We admire the paintings created by AI, read the articles written by AI, play games powered by it, consult with AI as a psychologist and much more.

And this is already a beginng of the new routine, our new creative reality.
